New Beginnings

Michael had nothing.

YOU HELPED MEND A BROKEN HEART THROUGH YOUR LOVE

We immediately went to work getting Michael clean clothes and a room. After a shower and a hot meal, he began to feel a renewed sense of dignity. “I’ve been treated with respect here, not like I’m less than someone else,” he told us.

Michael spent Christmas at our Mission and he was surprised and touched by the wonderful meal and festivities, especially when he received a present. It nearly brought him to tears. “I couldn’t even remember the last time I got a wrapped gift for Christmas.”

To feel loved and seen is so important. And that’s the kind of comfort your support helps us provide the men, women, and children who come to Detroit Rescue Mission Ministries.

Today, Michael is thriving. He serves as a deacon at a neighborhood church and is preparing to move into his first apartment. He couldn’t be prouder and yet he is also sad because he will miss his friends. But he’s taking their love with him and putting himself in God’s hands.

“Every day I wake up and thank the Lord. Even when I have a bad day, I pray and turn it into a good one.”

Michael is starting his life’s next chapter with restored faith and strength. Please, take a moment this holiday season and consider giving someone else like Michael the gift of a new beginning. Every success story starts with a hot meal that only costs $2.37!

A MESSAGE
FROM THE CEO

Chad Audi, PhD
President and CEO

Dear Friend,

Thank you for showing up for our most vulnerable neighbors in the Detroit community — men, women, and children experiencing homelessness and hunger.

YOU make it possible to provide Christian care and support, especially during Christmas, when so many of our guests are estranged from their families and hurting. It’s your ongoing support that helps the children in our Mission receive a nourishing Christmas meal and presents, instead of spending the day hungry or sad.

I can’t overstate my gratitude for the wonderful things you make possible.

Every day, I see the faces of our guests who are experiencing relief and comfort because of a hot meal, a shower, and clean clothing. In addition to that, they receive access to life-transforming programs for education, job training, and recovery support.

As we prepare to serve thousands of nourishing meals this Christmas season, I hope we can count on you to be our partner. The past three years have been devastating for many of our neighbors in Detroit and we can’t allow them to be forgotten. The truth is, we are facing a growing crisis of homelessness and hunger in our community, and we need you by our side more than ever.

Will you help us provide God’s love and care with a special Christmas gift this holiday season? No matter the amount of money, a compassionate act has the power to improve a life.

Rebuilding Detroit, one life at a time,

Chad Audi, PhD

Make a child smile on Christmas Day

Every child deserves to wake up Christmas morning to love, care, and a present. But when parents can’t even afford the basic necessities, like rent or food, it means that many children in Detroit won’t have a Christmas this year… unless someone like you helps. Through our Adopt a Family program, you will be a part of a Christmas miracle for children in our community.

Your support can help provide toys, warm clothes, books, and much more this holiday season. These special items will be made available in our Christmas Store, so that struggling parents are able to select gifts for their children to open on Christmas Day. Help spread the spirit of Christ’s love this season by adopting a family at our Mission.

Our Adopt a Family Christmas event is happening soon! If you would like to create a heartwarming memory for a family this year, please call Kisha Woods at 313-993-4700 or email [email protected].

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

SHOW UP, SHOW LOVE, & SHARE KINDNESS!

It’s such an uplifting moment when our guests are greeted by friendly faces and they feel the outpouring of love from our volunteers, especially during the holiday season. A kind word and smile can make a huge difference and brighten someone’s entire day. That’s why our volunteers are so important. Not only do they help our Mission achieve its goals, but they also bring us together as a community.

We know that many of our supporters may not have the financial means to donate money this year, and we understand. It’s been a tough year for so many people in the Detroit area. But if you want to help, volunteering is a meaningful way you can make a difference this Christmas.

Do you have a free weekend or an afternoon off from work? Showing up to serve food or packing gifts is a wonderful way to show kindness to a hurting neighbor who is experiencing homelessness and daily uncertainty. Flex your powers of giving back this year with a trip to our Mission!

We need as many hands on deck as possible to make this a true season of celebration for our homeless and hurting friends. If you would like to volunteer, please contact Kisha Woods at 313.993.4700 or email [email protected].

A LEGACY OF LOVE IN A SONG

Of all the people who have spent time at our Mission and contributed to helping our hurting neighbors, there’s only been one that left us with the legacy of a song.

Faye Chapel wrote Shelter of Love, and our choir still sings it at special Mission events. Her husband, Dr. William Chapel, was a long-time supporter like his wife.

This compassionate, community-minded couple worked with the late Bill Cutler, who was a prominent figure in the building of Detroit Rescue Mission Ministries. During the 1980s, they helped Mr. Cutler create a network of support for our hurting neighbors through involvement with multiple organizations.

Our team remembers Faye as a constant force of joy, who was always there to offer her kindness to the men, women, and children of our Mission. And although she has since passed away, the donation made in her name will continue to lift lost souls who come to us for food and shelter.

We are happy to celebrate her life of giving and shine a light on the wonderful work of a tremendous woman who will be dearly missed. We are certain her gift of song will continue to bring joy for many years to come.

It’s people like Faye and people just like you who are the heart behind our work. We are so grateful for all our donors, young and old. You are truly God’s blessing!
